Club Mourns Nyhan’s Passing

The Club recently lost a good friend. Former Boston Globe columnist David Nyhan passed away suddenly in January. A highly respected newspaperman, David was above all a man of the people. He received his introduction to the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club more than ten years ago when he joined a group of Globe colleagues and Club staff for a basketball game in the Club gym. He quickly became a “regular” in the weekly game. In addition to giving his all on the basketball court, David gave generously to the Club in countless other ways. In 2000, when the Club needed help meeting fundraising goals for the new Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center, David initiated conversations that led to new sources of financial support for the project. He consistently leant his support to other fundraising efforts such as summer golf tournaments and black-tie events.
David was also a patient advisor and mentor to the Club’s kids. He conducted writing workshops for aspiring journalists, and arranged career tours at the Globe’s Dorchester offices. “He was a real friend to the youth of Dorchester,” says Club President Bob Scannell. “He never said no to any request we had when it came to the kids.” David made his living by putting ideas into words, but he will be remembered most for translating his own heartfelt beliefs into positive action for the community.
