Athletic & Aquatic Programs Continue To Strive And Thrive
|
When the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club was founded in 1974, it became a magnet literally overnight for the neighborhood kids who reveled in the chance to swim in the full-sized pool and play basketball year round. Over the years, we added other enrichment programs such as Art and Music, Education, Social Recreation, Life Skills and Career Services, but our Athletics and Aquatics programs remained at the core of our Club’s mission. We currently offer intramural programs in basketball, floor hockey, and flag football. We offer swimming lessons for kids of all ages and our Marr-lins swim team is open to qualified swimmers ages 6 to 18. In the fall, members are invited to participate in a community-based Youth Soccer League, and in the spring, they begin training for the local Youth Baseball League.

During the summer, our Safe Summer Streets basketball league is one of the most popular activities for teens, with over 200 boys and girls participating.
Over 80% of all Club members (and countless other youth) participate in at least one athletic or aquatic program
For our members who do not naturally gravitate to team sports, we provide a multitude of individual fitness and athletic activities. Additionally, our Club was one of only 30 Boys and Girls Clubs nationwide to be selected in 2002 for participation in the new NikeGO program. NikeGO concentrates on non-team fitness activities such as gymnastics, Judo, bodybuilding and dance. Our third year of NikeGO programming concluded on June 4 with the one day NikeGO Olympics and Health Fair.

All members who engage in sports and fitness at the Club have the opportunity to participate in tournaments, meets or performances. These special events serve as a motivational tool, teaching members the importance of working toward a goal and always giving their best effort. Participation in sports not only keeps kids off the streets and out of danger, but also contributes to development of good habits that they will keep throughout their lives. They learn that exercise can be fun, and most significantly, they develop an eagerness to come back for more, anxious to use the athletic facilities, equipment, and staff assistance that are here for them every day.
