“Sporty girl” makes friends and learns respect
Angie is a self-described “sporty girl.” Here at the Club, she plays basketball, floor-hockey, wiffleball, soccer, and also does gymnastics. When she’s not in the gym, she can be found in the gamesroom where she likes to participate in Double Dutch and the Torch Club. At home, she watches baseball and basketball on TV. Her favorite class in school? You guessed it: Gym.
Angie has been coming to the Club since she was six-years-old, and she says that the most important thing she has learned here is to respect others. “I learned about other countries here,” she says. “I have a lot of friends at the Club…whether they are Portuguese or Jamaican, I’m their friend, I respect them.” Although Angie was born here in the U.S., her parents came from the Dominican Republic, and Angie has traveled there many times to visit family. When she grows up, she would like to be a doctor. “I want to help people in my country who are suffering and have a lot of diseases,” she says.
Her sweet smile and good manners have endeared her to many staff members here at the Club, so we are not ready to send her off to the Dominican Republic just yet. But, we are confident that whatever Angie decides to do when she reaches adulthood, she will do it with grace and enthusiasm.
