Student-Athlete Prepares for College Decision
Teresa Pina is an athlete and scholar. Last year, in an all-city track and field event, she finished first in the 800-meter race, third in the javelin throw, and she helped her 4-person relay team capture second place. She’s also co-captain of the Charlestown High School girls basketball team. Teresa brings the same drive and determination to her schoolwork that she does to her sports. She’s already received her college acceptance letter from Stanford, and is awaiting decisions from several other schools, including Duke and Harvard.
Teresa joined the Club almost five years ago, and she credits the staff and environment here with shaping her into the accomplished young woman that she is today. She’s an active member of the Club’s teen leadership group, Keystone, and has served for three years on the Harvard School of Public Health’s Youth Task Force, which is composed of outstanding high school students from across the city. She also holds a part-time job at the Club, and her supervisor, Mike Joyce says, “I’m always impressed with her ability to maintain so many responsibilities.” Teresa says that she wants to study psychology in college so that she can do for others what the Club did for her. “The Club helped me move past the influences of my neighborhood and peers. It helped me find my own interests and find out who I am.”
