When the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys & Girls Club was first established in 1974, the Club became a magnet, literally overnight, for the neighborhood kids who reveled in the chance to swim in the full sized pool. Today, our competition size swimming pool, which was completely renovated in 2002, serves as home to our 108-member swim team, the Marr-lins. We also offer swim lessons each season to over 260 children ages 4 17, and a fully supervised drop-in swimming program.
The Marr-lins are a developmental swim team that works toward building proficiency in all four competitive strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly. Our instruction and training emphasizes sportsmanship, dedication, and responsibility. Our swimmers are divided into two squads: the older or more advanced swimmers (Mega-Marr-lins) practice four days a week, and the younger or less experienced swimmers (Mini-Marr-lins) practice three days a week. The swim season runs from September through February, and includes sectional, regional and national meets.
Members who can swim at least 50 yards and want to experience being part of a swim team without the stress of competition can join our intramural swim team. Intramural swimmers have one practice session and one meet per week from the end of April until the middle of June.
We offer swim lessons for children ages 4-5 and 6-17. Classes for the younger children emphasize basic skills and water safety. For the older children, we provide progressive instruction for beginner, intermediate and advanced swimmers. All lessons are level-based, so that as a child becomes proficient in each level, he or she is able to move on to the next level.
When our Club pool is not in use by the Marr-lins swim team or members taking lessons, we open it up for free swim time. These open sessions allow members to enjoy the pool, practice swimming skills and play with friends. We also offer “Family Swims”, providing a chance for members and their families to enjoy the pool together.
