Programs : Individual Services

The Colonel Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club is committed to providing as complete a network of services as possible to our young members. We know that the process of growing up and maturing can be fraught with problems for many children, and we give careful consideration to the full range of members’ needs. Our Individual Services Department (I.S.D.) was first established in 1987 to provide family life education, counseling and crisis intervention for children along with their families. We work with members, as well as their families, on an individual basis.

While our staff seeks to involve parents as often as possible, we recognize that not all of our members enjoy the benefit of parental involvement. In some cases, members that have a supportive home environment receive guidance from their parents and are able to make the proper decisions. But in many cases, our youth are not supported in times of decision or crisis, and are in need of caring adult relationships in order to succeed in becoming responsible and productive adults. Over the years, our I.S.D. staff has consistently stepped in to fill that role for our young people. providing support, strength, and caring leadership to kids.

I.S.D. offers a series of programs that take place in a small group setting where members are able to discuss and learn about issues of concern to them such as drug and alcohol abuse, early sexual activity, self-esteem, hygiene and nutrition. We sponsor special workshops and discussion groups headed by volunteers from city agencies, health institutions and the Boston Fire and Police Departments.

The most important aspect of our ISD program is our outreach to members who have been identified as "at risk" or in need of special services. Our program targets delinquency prevention, aiming to reach youth who display difficulty integrating into structured programs. Our Individual Services staff provides one-on-one assistance, and plays an advocacy role in local schools ensuring that members receive the highest level of attention and care. A key element of this program's work is a comprehensive information and referral system, offered through our close association with other Dorchester-based service providers.

Individual and group services we offer throughout the year:
Smart Start Cavity Free Zone Parents Workshop
Smart Kids Health Fair
